A sound bath on its own is a remarkable thing. Most people who try one are surprised by how deeply it reaches — not just relaxing the body but quietening a kind of noise they didn’t know they were carrying.

But there’s something that happens in a combined Sound & Reiki session that’s different. Our clients try to describe it. They say things like “I felt something shift” or “it was like something let go that I’d been holding for years.” One client said she felt lighter driving home than she had in a decade.

We want to try to explain why.

What sound does to the body

When you’re in a sound bath, the vibrations travel through you — not just into your ears but through your tissues, your fluids, right down to a cellular level. Your nervous system responds by moving out of its default state of alertness into something slower and more restorative. Your breath deepens without you trying. The constant background hum of stress starts to quieten.

Most of us are bracing all the time without realising it. It’s in the shoulders, the jaw, the lower back. Sound helps to soften that — not by forcing anything, but by giving the nervous system permission to let go of its grip.

That’s the door opening.

What Reiki does

Reiki works with your energetic field — the layer of energy that runs through and around the body. A practitioner uses gentle, intentional touch to sense where energy is blocked or stuck, and to support the body’s own ability to rebalance.

We won’t dress this up in language that might make you raise an eyebrow. But if you’ve ever had a massage therapist find a knot you didn’t know you had, or felt unexpectedly emotional after a hug from someone you trust — you’ve already felt something of what Reiki works with. The body holds things. Reiki creates the conditions for those things to move.

Why together they go further

Sound prepares the body in a way that makes everything that follows more effective. When the nervous system has already softened, when the bracing has eased a little — the body becomes more receptive. The energetic field is easier to work with. Things that might have taken longer to reach become accessible.

They work on different layers at the same time. Sound comes from the outside in — vibration entering through the body and moving deeper. Reiki works from the inside out — addressing the patterns underneath the surface. Together they meet somewhere in the middle.

At Coterie, Lee holds the sound while Simone works with Reiki. Two practitioners, one continuous experience. Clients often tell us they couldn’t say where the sound ended and the Reiki began. That’s exactly how it should feel.

What people notice

We’ve had clients arrive barely able to stand straight and leave walking freely. We’ve had people process grief they’d been carrying quietly for years. We’ve had people who came in convinced nothing would happen spend the drive home trying to put into words what did.

We don’t take credit for any of it. We create the space. The rest is you.

If you’ve tried a sound bath and felt something but wanted to go further — a combined session is the natural next step. You don’t need to understand it fully before you try. You don’t need to believe in energy work. You just need to be willing to lie down for an hour and see what your body does when it finally gets some quiet.

We’ll be there. And you’ll be safe in our hands.
