You’ve taken the holiday. You’ve had the lie-ins. You’ve tried the bubble baths, the early nights, the “I just need to slow down” conversations with yourself.

And yet, you still wake up exhausted. Still feel like you’re running on fumes. Still snapping at people you love, zoning out in meetings, cancelling plans with that specific combination of guilt and relief.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not lazy. You’re not broken. You’re burned out. And the reason a week off didn’t fix it is because burnout isn’t fixed by rest alone.

Here’s what’s actually going on, and what a real recovery looks like.

What Burnout Actually Is (It’s Not Just Tiredness)

Burnout is what happens when your nervous system has been in a state of chronic stress for so long that it can no longer self-regulate effectively. It’s recognised by the World Health Organisation as an occupational phenomenon, not a character flaw, not weakness, and not something you can simply decide your way out of.

The symptoms go far deeper than feeling tired:

Sound familiar? You’re not alone. Studies suggest that up to 67% of all workers experience burnout at some point, and women, particularly those juggling caregiving alongside careers, are disproportionately affected.

Why Rest Alone Isn’t Enough

Here’s the thing nobody tells you: when your nervous system is stuck in survival mode, rest doesn’t actually register as rest. Your body remains in a state of low-level alert, continuing to produce stress hormones even when you’re lying still.

This is why you can sleep eight hours and still feel bone-tired. Why you can go on holiday and spend the whole time anxious. Why you can take a week off and come back feeling no different.

Recovering from burnout requires working with your nervous system, not just hoping it will sort itself out.

A Holistic Framework for Burnout Recovery

Real recovery happens across four interconnected pillars. When you support all four, your body starts to do what it already knows how to do: find its way back to balance.

1. Your Nervous System

This is where it all starts. Before anything else can shift, your nervous system needs to feel safe enough to move out of fight-or-flight. Simple, consistent practices like breathwork, gentle movement and sensory grounding begin to signal to your body that the threat has passed.

The key word is consistent. Ten minutes every day will do more than an hour once a week.

2. Nutrition

When you’re burned out, your body is using up nutrients at a far higher rate than usual, particularly magnesium, B vitamins, and vitamin C. This isn’t about dieting or overhauling everything at once. It’s about understanding what your depleted body is asking for, and giving it the simplest possible version of that.

Small, nourishing choices like more protein, more whole foods and less relying on caffeine to get through the afternoon start to restore what chronic stress has taken.

3. Sleep

Burnout and disrupted sleep are deeply linked. Elevated cortisol interferes with your ability to fall asleep and stay asleep, which in turn makes your nervous system harder to regulate the next day, and around it goes.

Addressing sleep during burnout isn’t just about going to bed earlier. It’s about working with your body’s natural rhythms, creating conditions where genuine rest is actually possible, and understanding why your sleep feels broken in the first place.

4. Boundaries

This one is often the hardest, and the most important. Burnout rarely happens in a vacuum. It usually builds slowly, through years of saying yes when you meant no, putting everyone else first, and treating your own needs as optional.

Recovery means starting to notice where your energy is leaking, and beginning, gently, to redirect it back to yourself. Not in a selfish way. In a sustainable one.

Where Do You Start?

That’s exactly the question we sat down to answer when we created the Stress & Burnout Recovery Roadmap.

It’s an 18-page practical guide that walks you through all four pillars above, with a self-assessment tool to help you see clearly where you are right now, four recovery phases to give you a realistic sense of the path ahead, and a personal planning template to make it your own.

No overwhelm. No dramatic overhauls. Just a clear, grounded framework that meets you where you are.

It’s available now as an instant digital download for £17.
